Best SEO software for small businesses

BEST FIT

For most small businesses: Ahrefs. It comes out ahead of Semrush. Our criteria barely separate these two. What does, and we do not measure it: Link index depth. We do not measure index size — nobody can from outside — so it does not move our ranking. It is nevertheless the reason most people choose this one over the other. Market and advertising data: traffic estimates for sites you do not own, and what competitors spend on paid search. We do not measure either, so neither moves our ranking — but if that is what you are buying, this is the one that has it.

We'll watch

● published price● plan or tier● decision condition● not-published state
You get
One email per change: the old figure, the new one, the date each was read, and a link to the page it came from.
You get
A flag when a vendor stops publishing something it used to publish — a price that becomes “contact sales” is a change worth knowing about.
You don't
A weekly digest, a nurture sequence, or a call. There is no sales team here to hand you to.
You don't
Your address passed to a vendor. No one you are watching learns that you are watching.
Categories you buy in
Seats you would be buying for

One click to stop, on every email. We keep your address, your categories and your seat band — nothing else, and no tracking pixel in the message.

Buyer decision

Buyer-first recommendation
WHY

If you only need to fix your own site: Sitebulb. It comes out ahead of Moz Pro.

CHOOSE SEMRUSH IF

A team that already runs weekly keyword and competitor checks and wants one tool that covers all of them.

Walk away if: You need one job done — a crawl, or rank tracking — and nothing else. You would pay for a suite to use a tenth of it.

IMPORTANT LIMIT

Semrush: The entry tier is the most expensive of the four verified for this comparison, and its published rate assumes annual billing — the month-to-month rate is higher. Checked Aug 21, 2026 on the vendor's page.

CHOOSE AHREFS INSTEAD IF

Backlink work above everything else — the index is the reason people pay for this one.

Walk away if: Several people need to run reports. Seats and credits are both limited, and the second person costs more than the first.

CHOOSE MOZ PRO INSTEAD IF

A small business that wants rank tracking and site health without a suite's price.

Walk away if: Backlink discovery is the job. The gap with Ahrefs shows up exactly there.

CHOOSE SITEBULB INSTEAD IF

Technical audits on sites you own, at a price that does not assume a whole SEO team.

Walk away if: You expected keyword research or rank tracking. Neither is here, at any tier.

WATCH OUT

Nobody will act on what the tool reports. An SEO tool tells you what to change; it does not change it. If no one owns publishing the fix, you are paying for a monthly reminder.

EVIDENCE

Publisher evidence and limits are used where they support the choice; unsupported claims stay out of the recommendation.

Use this evidence when

Which option fits this buyer, using only what these vendors publish?

◇ The answer holds for the source-backed evidence this guide names and compares — nothing beyond it.

◇ The answer section gives conditional picks from source-backed vendor evidence, even though no computed comparison graphic is drawn yet.

◇ The comparison table adds real cost, free tier, user / collaboration limits, billing / transaction limits, integrations / addons, plan limits, collaboration fit, capability fit and usage limits where vendor evidence supports it.

· Every dimension this decision needs has source-backed evidence on this page.

│ The answer changes when the buyer condition moves onto a different observed dimension, limit, billing unit, or proven breakpoint.

Side by side

Evidence behind the choice
SemrushUS$139/month

The entry tier is the most expensive of the four verified for this comparison, and its published rate assumes annual billing — the month-to-month rate is higher.

Publisher fact checked Aug 29, 2026View at Semrush ↗
AhrefsUS$129/month

Credits are consumed by report views, so the usable amount of work per month is capped in a way the headline price does not show.

Publisher fact checked Aug 21, 2026View at Ahrefs ↗
Moz ProUS$99/month

Its index is smaller than the two above it, which matters most on competitor and backlink work rather than on your own site.

SitebulbUS$18/month

It crawls and audits. It does not track rankings and does not carry a keyword or backlink index, so it replaces one part of a suite, not the suite.

Don't buy anything if…

You have fewer than about twenty pages. At that size a free crawl and Search Console cover the same ground, and the gap only opens once there is more site than you can hold in your head.

You are buying it to prove SEO works to someone else. A dashboard convinces nobody who was not already convinced, and it costs the same as the work it is replacing.

Questions people actually ask

What decides between two tools?

We name the criterion that decides, not a number. Saying a tool is ahead on entry price and on the cost of a second seat, and level on everything else, tells you whether the comparison applies to you. A single figure on a scale we invented does not — and we used to publish one.

What does “entry price” leave out?

The billing term, most often. Several of these publish the annual-commitment rate as the headline number, and paying month to month costs materially more. It also leaves out seats: on two of them the second person costs as much as the first.
