Best e-commerce platform for small businesses

BEST FIT

If price alone decides it: Big Cartel. At $15/month it is the cheapest of the five platforms we read a plan fee for, and it is the only one with no published yearly-sales ceiling — the price we quote holds whether you sell $10,000 or $2,500,000 a year, on the pages we read.

You get
One email per change: the old figure, the new one, the date each was read, and a link to the page it came from.
You get
A flag when a vendor stops publishing something it used to publish — a price that becomes “contact sales” is a change worth knowing about.

Buyer decision

Buyer-first recommendation
WHY

If you need a wider app and theme ecosystem and are willing to pay for it: Shopify. Its Basic plan is $39/month with no published sales-volume ceiling either — but card-processing fees are separate from that number, and they are not part of the price compared here.

If your sales are approaching six figures a year and you want processing fees that fall as you grow: BigCommerce. Its plan fee rises with a published yearly-GMV ceiling and the account auto-upgrades once you cross it — but the payment-processing percentage it charges on top declines at each tier, a mechanism none of the other four platforms we checked publish.

CHOOSE BIG CARTEL IF

Small creators and artists selling a limited catalogue who want the lowest published monthly fee in this reading and no sales-volume ceiling to plan around.

Walk away if: You need built-in point-of-sale hardware or a large product catalogue — Big Cartel’s pricing page targets a narrower catalogue than the others read here.

CHOOSE SHOPIFY INSTEAD IF

A merchant who wants the widest ecosystem of themes and apps and is comparing the flat platform fee alone.

Walk away if: Card-processing fees matter to your margin — Shopify publishes them separately from the plan price, and they are not part of the monthly figure compared here.

CHOOSE BIGCOMMERCE INSTEAD IF

A merchant who wants payment-processing fees that fall as sales grow, published on the same page as the plan price.

Walk away if: Your yearly GMV is close to a plan’s published ceiling — BigCommerce auto-upgrades the account to the next tier once you cross it, at a higher monthly fee.

CHOOSE VOLUSION INSTEAD IF

A merchant who wants a flat published GMV ceiling per tier, in plain dollars rather than a percentage-based overage fee.

Walk away if: Your yearly GMV could exceed $400,000 — Volusion’s Prime tier is “Based on GMV” with no fixed monthly price published; you would need to contact sales rather than compare a number.

WATCH OUT

You expect to exceed a few hundred thousand dollars a year in the near term and haven't checked BigCommerce's or Volusion's published GMV ceilings against your own forecast — the plan you buy today may not be the plan you're on in a year.

the closest anyone gets: Volusion Personal at $15,000 in yearly GMV ($35/month vs the winner) — the gap only widens from there, as the tiered vendors are forced into their next, more expensive plan.

Volusion Prime: no fixed monthly price published at $500,000 in yearly GMV — its page reads "Contact Sales"

Volusion Prime: no fixed monthly price published at $2,500,000 in yearly GMV — its page reads "Contact Sales"

Paid plans, monthly billing; yearly-GMV tiers read $15,000 to $2,500,000. BigCommerce and Volusion bound their plans by yearly GMV and are shown at the plan each tier requires; the vendors with no published GMV ceiling on the plans read do not move on this axis. WooCommerce (free core, cost shifted to hosting and extensions) is read but not on this axis — no single plan fee to compare. prices as published on the checked date.

Don't buy anything if…

You are comparing platforms on the monthly plan fee alone and ignoring payment-processing percentages — Shopify and BigCommerce publish theirs on the same pricing page, and at real transaction volume they can exceed the plan fee itself.

Questions people actually ask

Why does Big Cartel win at every sales volume you read?

Because it is the only platform among the five we checked with a monthly plan fee and no published yearly-sales ceiling. BigCommerce and Volusion publish tiers that scale with your yearly GMV — cross a threshold and the plan changes; Big Cartel's page names no such threshold, so the comparison never turns.

What about payment-processing fees?

They are real, and they are not in this comparison. Shopify and BigCommerce publish a percentage per transaction on top of the plan fee (BigCommerce's declines as you move up its tiers); the other three do not publish one on the same page. Mixing a percentage-of-sales fee into a flat monthly comparison would require assuming an average order size the current evidence does not establish, so we did not do it.

Why isn't WooCommerce in the yearly-sales comparison?

It reads differently, not more or less. The software itself carries no platform fee; the cost moves entirely to hosting ($25–$350/month for most stores) and paid extensions ($29–$299/year each), bought from separate vendors. There is no single monthly figure to place beside the other four, so it is compared tool-by-tool below instead.
